Sally Brown is Head of the Quality Enhancement Unit at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. She is an experienced educational developer and consultant on matters of teaching, learning and, especially, assessment - and publishes widely in these fields. She is vice chair of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA).
Angela Glasner is the Regional Consultant for the East Midlands and the West Midlands at the Higher Education Funding Council for England; and she was formerly Associate Director in the Quality Assessment Division. Her earlier academic career spanned a number of years in universities in England and Australia, culminating as Head of the School of Social Sciences at Oxford Brookes University.

I found the book to be very interesting and broad in its coverage. The analyses in the book are supported by the well written historical background. The arguments are flowing smoothly and coherently. Any trainee teacher would be at a loss without this book

This book offers trainee teachers, parents and current teachers a guide to approaching the occupation of teaching in a clear and consise manner, which is quite refreshing when compared to other academic books on this subject. The various chapters cover such topics as the various techniques and approaches of teaching, how to manage and organize a classroom for optimim performance, through to simple techniques for self-assessment and appraisal. I found the ideas in this book all the more enlightening as it is written by academics, most of whom are still teaching

Acknowledging the complexity and the richness of the field of research on literacy, the book demonstrates the futility of searching for a single right method of literacy development. Professor Kathy Hall was Head of the Centre for Educational Research at Leeds Metropolitan University before moving to the Open University. Typical college text book, boring. Used it for a master level class and thought it was ok. Found that I didn’t use it very often so maybe check to see if you even need it before purchasing.

About the Author
Dr Nicky Hayes is probably the most experienced and respected writer of psychology textbooks in the UK. She is the author of sixteen books, including Foundations of Psychology (1994), Teach Yourself Psychology (1994) and Successful Team Management (1996), as well as numerous articles and academic papers. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a qualified teacher and a Chartered Psychologist, and is currently Visiting Senior Fellow in the Department of Psychology, University of Surrey.

Eminently readable but also thorough

Nicky Hayes, while unfamiliar to me, is touted as being the best writer of Psychology research books in the UK. She (or he, as the case may be) is definitely an excellent writer. The prose is engaging and even funny. Everything is explained quite clearly. I used this textbook for a graduate-level research methods course in Linguistics, as many of the same kinds of analysis apply to Psycholinguistics as well. I recommend it highly for anyone involved in doing experiments who wants to know more about both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The field of Linguistics does not have any comparable book.

Universities are increasingly ideological. Many of the ideologies that are to be found on campus, such as entrepreneurialism, competition, quality and managerialism, express interests of the wider society but the university's own activities, such as research and even learning and teaching, are also becoming ideologies. Since ideologies are dogmatic in character, universities are being undermined and are being placed beyond all reason.

How, then, might universities live effectively, beset as they are with ideologies in their midst? Indeed, is it still sensible to conceive of universities as places of reason? In Beyond All Reason, Ronald Barnett argues that ideology is now a fact of life in universities but that a positive way forward is within reach.

Ideologies have been understood, rightly, as pernicious in nature, thwarting reason and the expression of human being. However, by returning to the ideals of reasonableness and generosity within the idea of the university, and by developing creative practices that build on those ideals, it is possible to construct virtuous idealogies that do justice to universities as universities in the twenty-first century.

Beyond All Reason continues Ronald Barnett's attempts to show that it is still possible to hold to and to live out an idea of the university. It is a bold and optimistic statement and is required reading for anyone concerned about the current state of university life.
