`Without curiosity, learning is dull and mechanical if it occurs at all.'

A member of my family has started tertiary study almost 10 years after completing secondary school and this is one of the recommended texts. I was intrigued by his description of the contents, and thought I would read it for myself. I am so glad I did: even those of us doing less formal learning can benefit from some of these suggestions.

While the book is Australian and draws on Australian experiences, I believe that what is written would apply to all senior secondary and tertiary students. Learning independently is the key to successful study at these levels, and enabling students to recognise how they learn and identify barriers to success is important. The book emphasises that there is no one way to learn and offers a comprehensive range of techniques to help in formal education.

Note: A fourth edition of this book was published in 2006, and expands on the third edition. The third edition is still widely available.

About the Author
Neil McKeganey is Reader and Director of the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at Glasgow University. He has carried out research on drug misuse, prostitution and HIV for the last ten years. He has published numerous articles on these topics and is the author, with Marina Barnard, of AIDS, Drugs and Sexual Risk Lives in the Balance Open University Press, 1992.

Marina Barnard is a senior research fellow at the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at the University of Glasgow. She has carried out research on drug use, prostitution and HIV for the last seven years, and has published widely in each of these fields. She is now carrying out research on young people's routes into drug misuse in Scotland.

About the Author
Emmy Van Deurzen is the founder and director of the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling. She is a chartered counselling psychologist and registered existential psychotherapist. She is past chair of the UKCP and of the Society for Existential Analysis, which she founded. She created Regent's College School of Psychotherapy and Counselling of which she was the Dean and where she was given a chair in psychotherapy and counselling. She is an honorary professor in psychotherapy with Schiller International University and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation at the University of Sheffield. She has published widely on existential psychotherapy and counselling, including her recent books Everyday Mysteries (Routledge, 1997) and Paradox and Passion (Wiley, 1998). She currently serves as external relations officer to the European Association for Psychotherapy, and is past Chair of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA) and of the psychotherapy section of the British Psychological Society (BPS). She is a fellow both of the British Psychological Society and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Claire Arnold-Baker is the Course Co-ordinator of the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling. She is a visiting faculty member of Schiller International University and teaches the Introduction to Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling short course at the New School. She is also the Chair of the Education and Publications Committee of the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA).

excellent collection on existential therapy

This is a wonderful collection of papers on existential therapy.
It covers a wide range of topics, from procreation, language, emotions, the family, groups, the self, to death, interpretation, the phenomenological method and other important issues.
It is a very accesible book, but at the same time, a very academic and well written book.
I recomend it with all my heart

About the Author
Brian Brown has worked as an emergency 24 hour lecturing service in a number of Midlands universities before joining De Montfort where he is programme leader in psychology.

Paul Crawford trained as a psychiatric nurse before completing a PhD in English Literature at the University of Birmingham. He is author of the critically acclaimed novel, Nothing Purple, Nothing Black and a work of literary criticism, Politics and History in William Golding.

Carolyn Hicks has pursued a long and distinguished career spanning disciplines such as educational psychology, health psychology and health service studies. At Birmingham university she combines her interests in these topics by specializing in the study of education for health service personnel and is involved in producing educational materials for health care researchers.
