Tim May is Professor of Sociology at the University of Salford. His writings include Probation: Politics, Policy and Practice (1991) and Situating Social Theory (1996), both published by Open University Press. He has also written, with Malcolm Williams, Introduction to the Philosophy of Social Research (1996), and with Zygmunt Bauman, Thinking Sociologically (forthcoming 2001). He has co-edited, with Dick Hobbs, Interpreting the Field: Accounts of Ethnography (1993), with A. Vass, Working With Offenders: Issues, Context and Outcomes (1996), and with Malcolm Williams, Knowing the Social World (1998), and is editing Qualitative Research: An International Guide to Issues in Practice (forthcoming 2002). About the Author
John Siraj-Blatchford is a Senior Lecturer at Homerton College, Cambridge. He has extensive experience in teaching science and design and technology education and in teaching and supervising research in the early years. He has also conducted a number of research projects of his own. He is the author of numerous academic papers and articles, and several books.

Iain MacLeod-Brudenell has taught in all phases of education, and had extensive experience of working with early years professionals through INSET and advisory work. His most recent experiences have been in teacher education; managing a PGCE course; teaching early years design and technology. He is currently programme leader for the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies course at the University of Derby. Iain has four grown up children and is now a proud grandfather.

The author makes modest claims for his book, calling it 'basic' and far from comprehensive. Nevertheless, much useful information can be found here, and it is a good school reference book for students with a grasp of Christian terms. Protestants will not be much confused over beliefs they share with Roman Catholics: 'grace' is helpfully projected into sanctification as well as forgiveness; 'justification' does not say that God sanctifies us to make us forgiveable, but it comes close. An Astounding Book- Very Well Researched

This is a very very well researched book. The price of the book, in my opinion, must be based on the amount of detailed, painstaking, wide ranging RESEARCH !! that went into the book.
The book is a well laid out collection of letters and memories of those people who actually knew GE. Some are very! unflattering. Some are written by people who saw, encountered, talked with, were long time friends with GE and her "husbands", and were completely overwhelmed with GE's charm, grace, wit, intelligence, and humility.

Over the past 10 years I have read Middlemarch six times. It is the best book I have ever read. I was hesitant to read ABOUT THE AUTHOR. Many times I have come away with a lower opinion of an author than what I would have thought possible. This book will give you whatever evidence you need to confirm your thoughts on GE. You will be astounded, as I was, with the vast spectrum of how others saw and experienced GE. It is like she is 10 different people!!!

My hat is off to K.K. Collins. I have read a LOT of philosophy, Greek and Roman writers, History and LOVE in-depth footnotes. This Collins is a person after my own heart. The detail is WONDERFUL. He does such a wonderful job of giving us a short background on who wrote these letters and memories, telling us where the document is now, what others thought about the citation just given.

For example- one letter was written by Mrs. Richmond Ritchie. Do you know who that is. Her maiden name was Anne Isabella Thackeray. Yes- she is the eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackery !!!! Dozens of people have letters and memories like that in this book.

Cosima Wagner. Who ever reads anything about what she said! But Collins says that Cosima heard of the last husband of GE jumping in the Grand Canal in Venice because he was so in love with GE and also he had a fever.

BTW- when Collins quotes these letters from these well known people (and others not so well known) you will get a chance to read beautifully written prose. What a delight to read them. So beautifully constructed, and yet the writers just sat down and jotted off a letter!!

Enough.
Such a wonderful book to meet not just GE, but so many other famous writers, historians, poets, philosophers, thinkers of that time period.

This book is well worth the money.
