A discussion of social change interrupted by war; was WWI a way to avoid the social movements in Ireland & Europe?

This paperback was intended to be a workbook to be used along side of another "seed work" book title written by a sociologist rather than an historian. It references a Marxist view of history among other social theories so anyone interested in war as social change might be interested in.this book. There were not enough footnotes or endnotes. The bibliography was limited to the same "invisible college" of supporting views. It did raise the question about "Global Capital Markets" being the cause of wars ever since WWI. The usual story focuses on "alliances" causing WWI; to what extent were those alliances influenced by the greed for raw materials from colonies for the purpose of Empire whether British, French or German?

The most poorly written book I have read in decades.

The introduction to the book is nine pages. Within the first two paragraphs "unequal," and "inequalities" are used seventeen times. Each chapter has an introduction and ends with "Conclusions." Here is the first sentence of Chapter One's: "The chapter has focused on the concepts of health inequalities and inequities." Title of Chapter One? "Health Inequalities and Inequities." The tome is less than 180 pages, yet has over 470 references.

In this book are important ideas. But because the same ideas are endlessly repeated in minutely different ways, the lessons are obfuscated. Summary: The wealthy are healthier and have more opportunities than the poor. That is how it has been and that is how it is, and the challenge is to equalize, or rather, that is to say, "neutralize" the inequalities and inequities such that the health inequalities and social inequities that exist in our societal circumstances, as evidenced by the wealthier becoming in most instances less unequal and the unequal becoming less equal in their equities, etc. etc. Unfortunately, this was a required text in my class and I paid over $30 to learn what everyone knows to be true...

Content is alright - I've read more compelling texts in regards to health and socioeconomic inequalities but it's an easy read. It serves it's purpose as a required text. I received this book in great condition in a timely manner.

About the Author
Sheila Payne is an applied social scientist with a background in nursing. Over the last twenty years she has been involved in leading and contributing to research and teaching about research methods in palliative care. She has a special interest in end-of-life care for older people, family caregivers and bereavement support. She currently holds the Help the Hospices Chair in Hospice Studies based at the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University, UK. She is also co-director of a large five year programme of collaborative research and development called the Cancer Experiences Collaborative. Sheila has published widely in academic and professional journals.
