About the Author
Dr Nicky Hayes is probably the most experienced and respected writer of psychology textbooks in the UK. She is the author of sixteen books, including Foundations of Psychology (1994), Teach Yourself Psychology (1994) and Successful Team Management (1996), as well as numerous articles and academic papers. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a qualified teacher and a Chartered Psychologist, and is currently Visiting Senior Fellow in the Department of Psychology, University of Surrey.

Eminently readable but also thorough

Nicky Hayes, while unfamiliar to me, is touted as being the best writer of Psychology research books in the UK. She (or he, as the case may be) is definitely an excellent writer. The prose is engaging and even funny. Everything is explained quite clearly. I used this textbook for a graduate-level research methods course in Linguistics, as many of the same kinds of analysis apply to Psycholinguistics as well. I recommend it highly for anyone involved in doing experiments who wants to know more about both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The field of Linguistics does not have any comparable book.

Many of the ideologies that are to be found on campus, such as entrepreneurialism, competition, quality and managerialism, express interests of the wider society but the university's own activities, such as research and even learning and teaching, are also becoming ideologies. Since ideologies are dogmatic in character, universities are being undermined and are being placed beyond all reason.

How, then, might universities live effectively, beset as they are with ideologies in their midst? Indeed, is it still sensible to conceive of universities as places of reason? In Beyond All Reason, Ronald Barnett argues that ideology is now a fact of life in universities but that a positive way forward is within reach.

Ideologies have been understood, rightly, as pernicious in nature, thwarting reason and the expression of human being. However, by returning to the ideals of reasonableness and generosity within the idea of the university, and by developing creative practices that build on those ideals, it is possible to construct virtuous idealogies that do justice to universities as universities in the twenty-first century.

Beyond All Reason continues Ronald Barnett's attempts to show that it is still possible to hold to and to live out an idea of the university. It is a bold and optimistic statement and is required reading for anyone concerned about the current state of university life.

Well written and well researched

I enjoyed reading this, it provides practical advice about the application of lean ideas into the aerospace industry. I also found the framework which compares lean to other change methods such as Six Sigma etc. very useful.

It outlines how to create a lean enterprise even in highly complex production environments. The ideas can also be used in other industries with great effect. Its well written and researched.

Opening the mind

This value of this book is the ability to open the mind to who wants to move from a product excellence-based company to a total product lifecycle value-based company; do not expect any magic receipe but only good principles, guidelines, examples and high-level methodologies. Execution is the real challance, to be done not in a one-shot approach but gradually.

Top management of most companies should read it.

Today we all witness the rapid changes of market trends and customer demands. Unfortunately too many companies set their vision long time ago in different circumstances and seem unable to adapt to current situation.

The book introduces the concepts of value stream, total quality control and other lean principles that enable the company to focus on value delivery to all stakeholders and quickly adapt the production processes to current market trends.

There are a number of inspirational examples from aerospace industry that enabled companies to eliminate waste and increase product value by implementing lean concepts which can be applied in other industries as well. Definitely a great introduction to lean philosophy for anyone interested in company strategy and process management.

In posing the question, “what is research for?”, Interviewing and Representation in Qualitative Research explores the processes of interviewing as itself a project intimately involved in contemporary debates around knowledge, freedom, power, ethics, modernism postmodernism, and globalisation.

What makes the book distinctive is its focus on interviewing not just as a tool to be used within other frameworks such as case study, action research, evaluation and surveys, but as an approach to organise a project as a whole, to provide frameworks for organising perspectives on the multiple ‘worlds’ of everyday life. It is argued that every project, every methodology, every theoretical perspective has its own rhetorical framework that interacts with the ‘world’ as subject of study or focus for intervention. The interview, as defined in this book, is both the process of constituting and de-constructing world views – it is the inter-view, the place between worlds. Without the ‘inter-view’ no dialogue and no alternatives as a basis for difference, change, and development would be possible. The inter-view as conceived in the book is fundamental to qualitative research as an emancipatory project.

Research practice is thus placed in the context of philosophical, theoretical and methodological debates, taking the reader beyond many introductory texts, making it suitable for all students and researchers who wish to advance the frontiers of their research and engage with contemporary social and political realities.

This is a high-quality empirical sociolinguistic study of the English of Los Angeles Chicanos. Fought has crafted a fine volume designed for two readerships. It is aimed at public school teachers who enter classes filled with the innocent and intimidating brown faces of Chicanos. It also provides English dialect scholars with a detailed review of key sociolinguistic issues that this contact dialect has generated.

About the Author
Michael Jacobs is Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Health and Community Studies, Bournemouth University, having worked for many years at Leicester University. He is is a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a psychodynamic psychotherapist registered with UKCP. His publications on psychodynamic counselling and therapy are used as key texts on many training courses.

David Edwards has taught at Rhodes University in South Africa since 1972 and has a longstanding interest in humanistic and transpersonal psychotherapy. He offers postgraduate courses in transpersonal psychology and the expressive arts in therapy. He is also a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and currently teaches and supervises trainee clinical psychologists in cognitive therapy and group therapy, and supervises research on clinical applications of cognitive therapy.

Glenda Mac Naughton is Associate Professor in the Department of Learning and Educational Development at the University of Melbourne, and author and co-author of a number of books including Rethinking Gender in Early Childhood Education (Allen & Unwin/Paul Chapman 2000), Communication in Early Childhood Services (RMIT Press 1999), Teaching Techniques with Young Children (Addison Wesley Longman 1998) and Working with Young Children (TAFE 1994).

Sharne Rolfe is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Learning and Educational Development at the University of Melbourne.

Iram Siraj-Blatchford is Professor of Early Childhood Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. Superb Starting Point For Understanding EC Research!

Boy, oh boy! This is a wonderful text!

Glenda Naughton has written on deconstruction, politics, and ethics in early childhood education, but here she just gives us the basics from a has of experts.

The best part about this book is how the concepts go from the simple to the complex. It starts off with quantitative (mean, mode, standard deviation, chi square, correlation, regression, etc.) and moves to the qualitative (surveying, interviewing, observationa/participatory research, ethnography, naturalistic design).

Its an excellent starting point for EC pros looking to better understand scholarly journals. It stops just short of multilevel modeling. I suggest you get a good qualitiatve textbook and quantitative textbook to go along with it.
