About the Author
Alan Walker is Professor of Social Policy at the University of Sheffield. Chair of the European Observatory on Ageing and Older People. Author of numerous books, reports and scientific papers on ageing and social policy, including The Caring Relationship (with H. Qureshi, Macmillan, 1989); The New Generational Contract (edited, UCL Press, 1996); and Changing Services for Older People (with L. Warren, OU Press, 1996). Tony Maltby is Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Birmingham. He contributes regularly as an abstractor for the journal Ageing and Society on European issues and is the author of Women and Pensions in Britain and Hungary (Avebury, 1994). His main research interest is the comparative study of pensions and income in later life. He is a member of the executive of the British Society of Gerontology and its Honorary Treasurer.

It compares narrative psychology with other social constructionist approaches and argues that the experience of self only takes on meaning through specific linguistic, historical and social structures. The author shows how the choice of one narrative over another - for example arising out of dominant narrative structures of power and control - can have serious social and psychological implications for the construction of images of self, responsibility, blame and morality.

Theoretical approaches are introduced and an overview of methods is provided, encouraging individuals to apply these theories to their own autobiographies. Such theories are further illustrated with case-study material drawing on physical illness (HIV infection) and childhood sexual abuse. Each of these issues is examined in a way which demonstrates how different contemporary narratives and discourses are used to construct meaning and a sense of coherent identity in the face of traumatic events which break down temporal coherence and order. Taken as a whole, this book represents essential reading for students and researchers interested in narrative psychology.

About the Author
Michele Crossley is a Lecturer in Psychology in the Department of Dentistry at the University of Manchester. She is author of Healing Sylvia: Childhood Sexual Abuse and the Construction of Identity (nee Davies, Taylor and Francis, 1995) and Critical Approaches to Health Psychology (Open University Press, forthcoming). She has published extensively in international journals in relation to the psychological and emotional aspects of traumatising events.

Understanding Personal Identity

Not only does the author weave philosophy, traditional social science, and contemporary narrative theory and methods together, she does it with a grace and anticipation of the reader's next question that are not found in other books on the subject. There is depth, complex analysis, and a light touch that encouraged me to read right on to the last page.

Everything a text should be - and more!

This book is absolutely everything a text should be: thorough, comprehensive, balanced, detailed, innovative and fascinatingly readable. I purchased it on the recommendation of Kittredge Cherry, whose own "Jesus in Love" novels have become a major source of deep inspiration over the past several years. Susannah Cornwall provides the in depth theological study of the insights that Cherry's writing crystallizes in fictional format.

I am not a newcomer to the world of reflection on theology and sexuality, having early in my married life come into personal conflict of conscience with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church banning contraception. At that time, which coincided with the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the posthumous publication of the works of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, I began an ongoing private evolution of my own understanding of God's intention concerning the development of one's erotic life as part of one's spiritual persona. Although this process was painful and, due to the lack (at that time) of appropriately non-doctrinaire guidance, definitely fumbling, I seem to have arrived at many of the same perceptions of other thinkers as discussed in Cornwall's exceptional text. How I would have loved to have had a guide such as she has written 40 years ago! Hopefully, others will be saved much struggle and confusion by her brilliantly clear analysis.

As a quick read-through of the Table of Contents illustrates, Cornwall really DOES cover all the bases. But beyond the main subject areas, she goes into some aspects that I believe are long overdue for discussion. One of these is the analysis of prostitution and the perception that any ethical discussion of "sex work" must go far beyond the issue of sexual morality and into the social and cultural factors of sexploitation and power politics that make this a major justice issue in modern times.

Obviously, the extensive discussion of same sex relationships which constitutes the final chapter of this book is totally relevant to the debates in the current political arena. I find it intriguing that the issuing of Cornwall's work and my reading of it coincides with the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis I. Major public commentary surrounding these events has focused on "matters sexual" - including the recent clerical pedophilia scandals which have tarnished the Church's image, and the current speculation concerning whether Pope Francis will continue to maintain the traditional rejection of married clergy and female priests, as well as reinforcing the ban on contraception and refusal to consider sanctioning gay marriage.

One of the most helpful aspects of this book as a "Core Text" is the inclusion of highlighted "Activity" and "Question Box" segments. These will be useful not only for those who wish to use this book in a class setting, but also - as I plan to use it - for ongoing personal study and reflection.

Excellent!

A simply fabulous little introduction to issues in theology and sexuality. Cornwall represents a broad spectrum of Christian theological thought without taking sides. Though leaning heavy on Anglican and Roman Catholic resources, she includes evangelical and Reformed theologians such as Barth and Grenz along the way. Enlightening and easy to read. Reflection questions and activities along the way give hand holds to ensure that students are engaging well. I'll definitely be using this book in an upcoming course.

Through a synthesis of old and new theories of social remembering, this book provides the first comprehensive overview of the sociology of memory. This rapidly expanding field explores how representations of the past are generated, maintained and reproduced through texts, images, sites, rituals and experiences. The main aim of the book is to show to what extent the investigation of memory challenges sociological understandings of the formation of social identities and conflicts. It illustrates the new status of memory in contemporary societies by examining the complex relationships between memory and commemoration, memory and identity, memory and trauma, and memory and justice.

The book consists of six chapters, with the first three devoted to conceptualising the process of remembering by analyzing memory's function, status and history, as well as by locating the study of memory in a broader field of social science. The second part of the book directly explores and discusses theories and studies of social remembering. After a short conclusion, which argues that study of collective memory is an important part of any examination of contemporary society, the glossary offers a concise and up to date overview of the development of relevant theoretical concepts. The result is an essential text for undergraduate courses in social theory, the sociology of memory and a wider audience in cultural studies, history and politics.

About the Author
Barbara A. Misztal is Professor of Sociology at Leicester University. She received her PhD from the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). She worked at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of PAN, Warsaw and Griffith University, Australia, teaching social science, politics and European Studies. She is the auuthor of Trust in Modern Society, Informality: Social Theory and Contemporary Practice and co-editor of Action on AIDS.

About the Author
Grace Cook is a freelance primary mathematics consultant working in primary classrooms in London. She has a breadth of experience ranging from secondary teaching in Ghana to initial teacher training and working with early years children in London. She is presently focussing on in-service training, but has also worked as a classteacher of primary age children, more recently in the early years. She worked for some years as a primary maths advisory teacher for the Inner London Education Authority and contributed to writing, trialing and in service training for the ILEA 'Checkpoints' series.

Lesley Jones is a Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She taught in Birmingham prior to moving into higher education. She has published numerous articles in a variety of journals including Mathematics in School, Mathematics Teaching and Child Education. Together with Roy Richards, she co-authored An Early Start to Mathematics, published by Simon and Schuster. She has also edited a book entitled Teaching Mathematics and Art published by Stanley Thornes and contributed to a book published by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Exploring Mathematics with Younger Children.

Cathy Murphy is Senior Lecturer in primary mathematics education at the University of Greenwich. Prior to this she has been an infant class teacher, primary mathematics consultant, mathematics advisory teacher and deputy head in London schools. She is presently involved in in-service education and initial teacher education. She was involved in the trialing of ILEA 'Checkpoints' and also contributed to Mathematics in Primary Schools: Children and Mathematics, Making it Happen and Beam Starters Harper Collins.

Gillian Thumpston worked in London primary schools before becoming a member of the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) Mathematics Team. She contributed to Mathematics in Primary Schools: Children and Mathematics, Making it Happen and Beam Starters now published by Harper Collins and was a member of Beam, a mathematics curriculum development project. Before moving to her present post as Curriculum Development Advisor for Essex Advisory and Inspection Service, she was a lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

In this operationalism, the key question is not 'What do students understand?' but 'What can students do?' The book develops an alternative view, suggesting that, for our universities, a third and heretical conception of human being is worth considering. Our curricula might, instead, offer an education for life.

There is growing interest in the possibilities of combining research approaches in education and social sciences, as dissatisfaction mounts with the limitations of traditional mono-method studies and with the schism between quantitative and qualitative methods.

This book argues the case for combining multiple research methods, and provides much-needed practical guidance for researchers who want to use this mixed-methods approach. The authors believe that all research has an over-arching logic and that, within this, the fruitful combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is possible. They develop the idea of the ‘new’ education and social researcher, for whom the combination of approaches is a representation of a diverse skills base, rather than a matter of ideological or theoretical allegiance. The book outlines and evaluates methods that are currently used, and looks at combining different methods across and within studies, including complex interventions, Bayesian approaches, new political arithmetic, triangulation, life histories and design studies. It offers a radical, new and very simple way of working with numbers.
