She is a co-author of Women Viewing Violence (1992, with Philip Schlesinger, Rebecca Emerson Dobash and Russell P. Dobash). Her work has been published in the Australian Journal of Communication, Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, Management Communication Quarterly, and Media, Culture and Society, as well as in a number of edited books. Helen W. Kennedy is Senior Lecturer and MA Award Leader in the School of Cultural Studies, University of the West of England, Bristol. Helen has spoken at a number of both academic and industry conferences on the role of women in computer games and computer games culture. She was invited speaker at the GDC Europe Academic Summit August 2003 and the Women In Games conference June 2004.

Game Cultures

I have just finished reading Jon Dovey and Helen W. Kennedy, Game Cultures: Computer Games as New Media. I really enjoyed Game Cultures, and it was especially interesting because the first half of it was read in parallel with Marie Laure Ryan's Narrative as Virtual Reality from 2001. Dovey and Kennedy share Ryan's focus on embodiment in game texts but they take it further as a subject in itself, rather than as a part of Ryan's structural approach to Narrative. The triumph of Game Cultures is the critical term `technicity' as adapted from Tomas (2000). Technicity permits analysis of dialogue between players and games and between the various discourses taken up within games; as text (and according to Dovey and Kennedy there is room for games as text and they take a hybrid approach to game analysis), as play and as cultural system/s. I see the hybrid approach of Game Cultures as a positive development in game research, it embraces rather than demarcates territory that is uncertain and dynamic and this is very appropriate considering the fluid nature of games.

Some faults I can see with Game Cultures? I don't mean to whinge...but I will. The biggest thing that got to me was, why aren't there any notes to the text? Second, the most detailed analysis of a text using the tools described in Game Cultures comes in the form of a sociology style study of a game development company. Rowena Murray is a senior lecturer in the Centre for Academic Practice at the University of Strathclyde. A nice pep talk

If you want to know the structure of a purpose statement or research questions, or formats for a desertation, this is NOT the book for you. This is a pep talk on how swell it would be to write one, time management (which you should ALREADY be into) and cute and witty goody nice stuff. I was looking for examples and structure and theory. I can get all the time mgt stuff from my mentor. If you need a book to boost your morale, this could be the book for you. If you're looking for a book on the mechanics of writing a thesis this book is NOT for you. I wish I could get a refund. This book is that bad.

It's NOT well written and if you are already into this, you'll find the writing style too soft and yucky, like a coffee shop discussion; nice and cute converations, but no real substance.

A must-buy for all graduate students and their supervisors

I work in universities and specialize in supporting academic staff/professors to improve the quality and productivity of their academic writing. I've been doing this work for just under 10 years. Rowena Murray's work has fast become a classic in the area called "writing practice", which is about how you approach writing; what techniques to use to be a productive and successful writer; how to think about the act of writing. At my university, we have adapted much of what Murray has written here about the thesis to apply generally to academic writing.

This isn't the traditional thesis book of... here's what a lit search looks like... here's what a problem statement is... here's how to write up your methodology. But you've got those books already, right?

Instead, Murray talks about what to do/how to actually write. It's a must for all graduate students and their supervisors. Mine is highlighted, dog-eared and sticky-noted.

The revised and updated edition of this widely acclaimed survey takes account of the very different global context in which any discussion of democracy must now take place, including the mighty power of the multinationals vis-a-vis elected governments, the resurgence of the idea of an Islamic alternative to the Western democratic ideal, and the suggestion that unelected but powerful international bodies are effectively eroding the authority of the democratic state.

Anthony Arblaster looks first at the history of both the theory and practice of democracy, and the fierce opposition it has often provoked, showing how the representative version of democracy we are now familiar with was a relatively late arrival on the scene. He finds the core of the idea of democracy in the notion of popular power, and in the second part of the book he explores the meaning of this and the problems it involves.

Drawing on the classic writings of Rousseau, Paine and John Stuart Mill, he shows how wide the gap is between their vision of a fully democratic society and the limited realities of the Western democracies of today. Democracy, he argues, remains a relevant ideal and a challenge to much conventional political thinking, as well as to the centralizing tendencies of global power.

This book is quite short, but contains a considerable amount of information. It presents the basic history of democratic government systems and provides the reader with brief orientations on the many issues facing democratic systems, including problems of majority rule, methods of fair and useful representation, etc.
