David Friedrich Strauss's Das Leben Jesu kritisch bearbeitet (1835) brought about a new dawn in Biblical criticism by applying the 'myth theory' to the life of Jesus. Strauss treated the Gospel narrative like any other historical work, and denied all supernatural elements in the Gospels. Das Leben Jesu created an overnight sensation and Strauss became embroiled in fierce controversy. This earliest English version of 1846 was translated by the novelist George Eliot, and was her first published book.

Strauss's interpretation of biblical events was a result of and a response to the attacks on orthodox Christianity brought by the Enlightenment. In the face of scepticism about such biblical events as miracles, his aim was to explain how Christians came to believe when there was no objective historical basis for their faith. Taking the resurrection as the key article of faith, his verdict was that religion was an expression of the human mind's ability to generate myths and interpret them as truths revealed by God. Influenced by Hegel and Schleiermacher, Strauss characterized Christianity as a stage in the evolution of pantheism that had reached its culmination in Hegelian philosophy. He thus created an entirely new atmosphere of scholarship on Christ's life and historical criticism of the Bible. The furore turned the Life of Jesus into a cause célébre and to German liberals Strauss became a symbol for the freedom of thought.

I was a little disappointed as I found this very difficult to read owing to the style of language that this was written in (early nineteenth century)

WARNING: This edition is only 1/2 the book

This review is on the edition and not the content. The content is excellent - but this edition starts on page 451. There is no indication that this is really volume 2 but it is. Even the introduction that explains that this book is now public domain doesn't point out the book is about to start more than 400 pages into the book. Now if you had to pick one half this would be the half. So buy the book by all means but know what you are getting. If they do put out volume 1 I will happily buy it.

THE MOST MONUMENTAL OF ALL 19TH CENTURY "LIVES OF JESUS"

David Friedrich Strauss (1808-1874) was a German theologian and writer. This 1835 book (revised several times) was revolutionary, because it subjected the four gospels to a minutely-detailed critical examination, and pointed out the various inconsistencies between them. It remains the most detailed such examination of the gospels to this day. (Accordingly, Christian apologists---such as John Haley's Alleged Discrepancies Of The Bible---are particularly proud when they feel they can find a way or "harmonizing" the gospel accounts that weave around one of Strauss's criticisms.)

Unlike the earlier rationalists who, like the traditionalists, assumed that there was a historical kernel underlying all the material in the gospels---including the miracles---Strauss boldly argued that the gospel writers were not eyewitnesses to the events they professed to describe, and that many gospel stories (such as the virgin birth, the Transfiguration, the Ascension) were simply historical "myths," created by the community of Jesus' followers in order to illustrate otherwise inexpressible religious truths. Strauss also challenged the historicity of the fourth gospel, calling it much less "historical" than the synoptic gospels.

One cannot summarize an 800-page book (in small print!) within the confines of an Amazon review, so let me just give one quotation to give you the idea: concerning the "soldiers sleeping at the tomb" story in Matthew 28:11-15, Strauss comments, "their (i.e., the "chief priests") conduct, when the guards, returning from the grave, apprised them of the resurrection of Jesus, is truly impossible. They believe the assertion of the soldiers that Jesus had arisen out of his grave in a miraculous manner. How could the council, many of whose members were Sadducees, receive this as credible? ... (they would not) be inclined to believe in his resurrection; especially as the assertion in the mouth of the guards sounded just like a falsehood invented to screen a failure in duty. The real Sanhedrists, on hearing such as assertion from the soldiers, would have replied with exasperation, 'You lie! you have slept and allowed him to be stolen; but you will have to pay dearly for this, when it comes to be investigated by the procurator.'"

Albert Schweitzer (in his equally monumental The Quest of the Historical Jesus) gave the most glowing of reviews to Strauss's book, and any serious student of Jesus, the "historical Jesus," New Testament studies, or Biblical criticism, absolutely MUST devote serious study to it.

an excellent and accessible text book.

The book introduces the student to the sometimes difficult ideas of contemporary thinkers such as Foucault, Derrida, Habermas and so forth. Organised thematically and covering topics such as 'power', 'language', 'culture', 'the body' and 'the subject' the book is comprehensive yet always readable and informative. It is certainly essential reading for students looking to orient themselves in the study of contemporary social and political theory. I found it a very helpful introduction to the area and have used it a lot for essays I have had to write. Although I have only had the book for a few weeks it is already almost falling apart due to over-use. It made the things my professors have been teaching me much more clear than I ever thought they would be. I highly recommend it to students everywhere.

Great reference, standard for Investmentbankers and Students

This book is a great handbook for both M&A professionals and MBA Students. It covers all aspects of M&A with an international perspective in an easy-to-read manner. It is not focused on a single market, but on cross-border transactions, which are becoming more and more important.

As a M&A Expert, Mr. Picot knows what he is talking about. He is also a professor teaching in Graduate Programms at the Institute for Mergers and Acquisitions of the Private University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany's first institution covering the topic. So he is able to combine academic and practical aspects of M&A in a very useful and refreshing manner.

The first part about the planning phase focuses on Commercial and Legal Aspects to be Considered in Structuring International Mergers and Acquisitions, Mergers and Acquisitions from a Capital Market Perspective and Taxwise Structuring of the Transaction.

The second part is about M&A execution, covering the commercial aspects involved in Executing Mergers and Acquisitions, with Particular Emphasis on the Transaction Agreement, Due Diligence and Valuation, Corporate Evaluation and Merger Control.

After that, one of the most important aspects of M&A is shown in detail - the integration of the targets. Post-merger Management, Legal Parameters of the Integration and Implementation Measures, Personal and Cultural Integration and Internal and External Communication are the contents of this part. Unfortunately, you don't find this in many books.

I must admit to having a more than vested interest in Mr Cupitt, he was a lecturer in the philosophy of religion at the university in which i now study theology. (Cambridge) His work is to my mind of the most fundamental importance to anyone who is not prepared to dismiss religion as "the opium of the people" but finds its claims to supernatural truth unteneble in the scientific age in which we live. He offers the reader a reason to let go of the traditional dogma of the church, not just because it seems unbelievable these days, but it is he says the prerequisite to finding a true spirituality, and a genuine religious experience in which the individual can be an autonomous moral and personal agent. For many people his approach is far too radical to be taken seriously, (some even find it offensive.) But he allows for this in his book, he says that to understand him one has to make fundamental changes to their outlook on the world and that most people will not be able to do this. I am not a religious person, and this maybe why i had less problems with him than many of the people i study with. But whether you agree with all he says or not, one cant miss the passion with which he writes, nor misunderstand depth of his own spirituality. This book fundamentally altered my view on the world, and my approach to the subject both academically and emotionally has been changed through reading it. He is the one author i recommend to any one who tells me that religion or more specifically christianity is outdated or naive. Read this book, even if you disagree with everything he says, it will give you a much greater idea of why you believe what you do.

The new religion

Don Cupitt has for years been teaching philosophy of religion in Cambridge, England. I find him to be one of the most interesting and radical thinkers in England today.
In his book, Cupitt suggests a new spirituality. The old belief in the metaphysical God, Cupitt finds unintelligible. Cupitt is much inspired by thinkers like Wittgenstein, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, and he advocates a human-centred spirituality without belief in the God of Christian theism. God is for Cupitt the sum of our values and ethical standards. "The true God is not God as a picturesque supernatual fact, but God as our religious ideal", he writes. Cupitt's God is not external, but something you can create through your thoughts and form of life.
Cupitt may be critized like the rest of the postmodern movement. When he writes "reality does not determine language: language determines reality", he is far too radical, and I don't think for instance Wittgenstein would agree with this.
But Cupitt is very interesting. One may get the feeling that he has an agenda, and is thinking with his soul, not merely playing an intellectual game. He challenges you. Cupitt is an excellent writer who should be read and discussed!
