About the Author
Dr Estelle M. Phillips is an independent educational consultant. She specializes in giving advice on appropriate provision for research students, and in conducting training for doctoral students and supervisors.

Professor Derek S. Pugh is Emeritus Professor of International Management of the Open University Business School. He has considerable experience in the design of doctoral programmes and the successful supervision of PhD students.

Good, but could be better

This book is perfect if you are going to apply for a Phd in Britain. If you are going to do so, buy it!. However, in my opinion is not worth to buy it if you are already a phd student or you are not in the British phd system. In this case I suggest you to borrow the book or to find it in your library for a fast read. I think that the book is a little expensive for the information you will find in it. It is full of obvious advices that you probably already know, but it is not bad to see them written.
As I see it, the most important things in the book are: the definition of phd, the chapter "How to do research", the psychological aspects related with the phd process, and the chapter "The form of a Phd thesis".
The worst things are: the chapter "How to survive in a predominantly British, white, male, full academic enviroment"; I think the information reported in this chapter is common in all social and professional environments and not specific to the phd, people that belong to minorities or are under harassment situations can easily find information in more specific literature. This chapter could be substituted by a more usefull one that could be titled: "Before the Phd"; there could be inserted important information that is not present now. i.e. in science phd's is very important to have a strong mathematical background "before" you start or to have adecuate English writing/reading skill "in any case"(so you should work hard before the phd if your mother language is not English).
As conclusion, I think that the book is helpful in general and it is worth to have a look on it; a valuable point is that it is the result of a profound analysis of the British Phd process, but in another hand this can be counteractive if applied to non-british phd.

This book cover most of the pitfalls likely to be encountered by students. Because it also includes advice for supervisors it helps remove the me-vision that most of us students suffer from a lot! Good practical advice on how to get going, keep going and complete the degree without becoming any more insane than strictly necessary

The first chapter investigates the positions of Christians in Jerusalem in the first two centuries, since they were the ones who in fact introduced the concept of heresy into the church, and pays particular attention to the revision of the portrait of Paul and his theology. Then it goes on to the dramatic events around Marcion and his approach to a scriptural canon. Thirdly, it examines the conflicts underlying the Johannine writings, the formation of the Apostles' Creed and the formation of the New Testament canon. Professor Luedemann argues that his findings have important and liberating consequences for the understanding of both Christianity and the Bible.

Gerd Ludemann is Professor of New Testament at the University of Gottingen in Germany and Director of the Institute of Early Christian Studies. He taught for several years at Vanderbilt Divinity School and has authored several works of New Testament scholarship, including "What Really Happened to Jesus: A Historical Approach to the Resurrection".

All of Professor Luedemann's scholarly books are brilliant. They all deal, as this one does, with various aspects of early Christianity. In this book the orthodox notion that Christian orthodoxy existed early on and all dissent came later in the first two or three centuries after Jesus is found erroneous. Luedemann demonstrates (in the tradition of Walter Bauer who wrote in the 1930's a pathbreaking book on Heresy and Orthodoxy in the early church) that what became orthodoxy was a much later development in opposition to various Christian positions, both gnostic and Jewish. In fact the real orthodoxy should most likely have been the religion of Jesus' brother James of Jerusalem and his Jewish-Christian church, later called the Ebionites. These most authentic Christians and followers of Jesus were later damned by the orthodox power brokers as heretics.

Charles Neal is a UKCP accredited humanistic and integrative therapist, a trainer, supervisor and group worker; Founder of the Association for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Psychologies; poet, writer and photographer; leads gay men's groups and creativity groups; Director of Transform Consultancy, London.

Dominic Davies is a BAC accredited counsellor and therapist practising in the person-centred approach. He is a Visiting Fellow at Nottingham Trent University and a former Chair of the Association for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Psychologies. Dominic runs an international training consultancy specialising in sexuality issues in Europe and Australasia. He is also in private practice in London as a therapist and supervisor.
